Shaw Girl Happenings

Here's a few pics of our Sunday afternoon hike, on yet another gorgious fall day in western New York. This one is about a 5 mile chunk of the East Overland Trail. This sign is right off the parking lot. Doesn't it make you want to just jump right in and start hiking?

There's got to be a special term for the camping in a convertible. Minimal? Convertible Packing? Converting it (as in roughing it?) Rick and I pared down to the basics: tent, stove, dining shelter, a small cooler, sleeping bags, and 2 sets of golf clubs. And a bottle of wine. Cruising to Syracuse with the top down...priceless.

Rick and I decided, on a whim, to travel and surprise Matthew at the closing ceremonies of Boys State, hence the camping trip at Green Lakes. The biggest surprise, however, was when Matthew said "So...are you driving me home?" And we said "Nope, sorry! No room in the convertible for you, you'll have to take the bus!"

I hope you all had a great Memorial Day! We went to the 21st Annual Turnquist/Liuzzo Picnic on Sunday. Beautiful weather here in WNY. Lots of people come to this. Rick's cousins from Ohio and Iowa always make it, and even Mother and Daddy have been to this twice. This is a carnivore event, as demonstrated above by Katie. I bring baked beans and the United States of Jello every year. (I should have taken a picture of the jello.) Rick's sister Tina and her family (Liuzzo) host the event in their backyard every year.

Here's some more pictures from our ski season. On the last day of the season, we cleared our lockers, gave the skis a final waxing, and bid the Peek "good-bye and thanks for a great season" on a beautiful sunny 65 degree day. Now that we've stored the skis and polished up the clubs, we have a foot of snow in the back yard. Oh well...welcome to western New York!

Between Brian and I, we got some great photos of us skiing in action! Here's me. I took a great clinic this season from Billy Beerman of PSIA, that really changed how I think about, and execute, my turns. I'm happy with my form in this picture.

Matthew was working at the ski school when we took these pictures. I caught up with him later in the day in the moguls, his favorite place to ski.

We give thanks to God that Rick walked away from Saturday's accident without as much as a stiff neck. A county snowplow, believing that stop signs don't apply to plows, T-boned our van. Rick was on his way to pick up our family of ski-instructors at the Peek.



Cindy, our beloved van, who faithfully drove me through 2 college degrees, and several family vacations packed to the gill, is toast. We salute her steadfastness, and Rick's defensive driving skills.
